Abstract: I will summarize the first four chapters of Gareth Wilkens’ book, Profinite Groups and Residual Finiteness. Specifically, I will cover the chapters on inverse limits; profinite groups, including examples and basic constructions; residually finite groups, focusing on basic examples and related problems; and profinite completions, residually finite groups, and their invariants, along with pro-p groups. Residually finite groups are those that can be embedded into their profinite completions. Additionally, I aim to discuss several problems in infinite group theory where techniques from profinite groups can be adapted.
