Introduction to Quantum Mechanics (and Physics Notation)

15-21 September 2025

Title of the course: Introduction to Quantum Mechanics (and Physics Notation)
Instructor: Dr. Sven Gnutzmann
Institution: University of Nottingham
Dates: 15-21 September 2025
Prerequisites: Linear Algebra, Complex numbers
Level: Graduate/undergraduate (anyone who has done linear algebra and complex numbers)
Abstract: This course introduces the postulates of quantum mechanics for students who have a background in mathematics who want to understand how problems in theoretical and mathematical physics are related to the underlying mathematical background. Some paradigmatic examples, such as the quantum harmonic oscillator, will be solved mathematically, and corresponding physical predictions will be explained.
The course will use physicist notation and explain the standard abuse of notation common in theoretical and mathematical physics. As such the course is intended to facilitate future communication between mathematicians and physicists.
