Abstract: This course considers Hilbert’s 17th problem from a model theoretic perspective and in the process introduces some of the basics of the model theory of real closed fields, including quantifier elimination and model completeness.  Knowledge of model theory is not a prerequisite, but a basic familiarity with fields, extension fields, and polynomial rings is assumed.
