Abstract: The goal of this course is to introduce the restricted Burnside problem and its reduction to a question on Lie algebras. We aim at establishing the following wonderful theorem of Zelmanov: any Engel Lie algebra of characteristic 0 is nilpotent. We will also describe some model-theoretic consequences of this result.
