Abstract: Classical groups are the groups of the ‘usual’ linear geometries. Of course ‘usual’ depends on your mathematical experience, but the first examples are GL(n,K) and SL(n,K), the definition of which should be familiar.
The purpose of this course is to study these geometric objects using abstract group theory. Week 1 will consider SL(n,K) and week 2 the so-called symplectic group Sp(2n,K).
