An Introduction to Algebraic Topology

4-10 August 2025

Title of the course: An Introduction to Algebraic Topology
Instructor: Dr. Bahar Acu
Institution: Pitzer College of the Claremont Colleges
Dates: 4-10 August 2025
Prerequisites: Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra. Some group theory background is useful, yet not necessary since basic group theory will be introduced.
Level: Advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate
Abstract: This course serves as an introduction to algebraic topology, tailored for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students with no prior exposure to the field. In this course, we will study topological manifolds by using algebraic constructions used to determine if two differently presented topological shapes are indeed different. Topics include homeomorphisms, cell complexes, Delta complexes, simplicial homology, singular homology with various computations and applications of these notions for fundamental examples.
