Abstract: Many of the groups that appear in the classification of finite simple groups are constructed by way of groups of automorphisms of vector spaces over finite fields, possibly equipped with bilinear forms. We will describe the basic theory of these `classical geometries’ and show how they lead to interesting groups. Time permitting, we might explain how these spaces make interesting appearances in combinatorics and logic.
